Congresswoman Schultzs Idiotic Attack on Gov. Palin

August 29, 2008 at 6:37 pm (Uncategorized)

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schulz (D-FL) sent out press releases this afternoon accusing Alaska Governor Sarah Palin of being apart of the Alaska culture of corruption.

“There has been a culture of corruption [in] Alaska. Sen. Ted Stevens, Congressman Don Young, Gov. Sarah Palin — they are all cut from the same cloth,” Wasserman Schultz stated.

You see a lot of lies and stretching the truth in politics but this on takes the cake. No one has been more involved fighting corruption in Alaska (and maybe the entire US) than Governor Palin.

In 2006 Palin defeated incumbent Governor Frank Murkowski (R) who was shady at best, criminal at worst. She was also involved in running Lt Gov. Sean Parnell against Rep Don Young who faces a laundry list of corruption charges. The election was held the 26th but I cannot find the official results. The latest news stories on it were from yesterday and they say Young was up by less than 100 votes with 98% of the precincts reporting. Absentee ballots also have yet to be counted.

Palin has also encouraged Sen. Ted Stevens to come clean about his financial dealings. She supported his opponent in the primary although Stevens survived.

Palin also shook up the state party and removed questionable elements.

Congresswoman Scultz’s attacks are unfounded. Not only did Gov. Palin take on corruption, she did it very effectively and in her own party.

Maybe Schultz should stick to something more in her pay grade and fix her nappy, frizzy hair and leave the politics to those who are not idiot’s.

Yikes!

McCotter and Other Catholic Congressmen Correct Pelosi

August 28, 2008 at 6:31 am (Uncategorized)

Catholic House Republicans to Pelosi: Correct the Record
08/27/2008

Nineteen Catholic House Republicans led by Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) signed a letter sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking her to correct comments she made on NBC’s Meet the Press regarding the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion. In the letter, the Catholic representatives said Pelosi misrepresented Church doctrine and quote from Pelosi’s exchange with Tom Brokaw on the issue. The letter asks for Pelosi to apologize and correct the public record.

The text of the letter is below.

August 26, 2008

The Honorable Nancy Pelosi

Speaker of the House of Representatives
H-232, The Capitol
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Speaker Pelosi,

On the Sunday, August 24th, broadcast of NBC’s Meet the Press, you stated “as an ardent, practicing Catholic, [abortion] is an issue that I have studied for a long time.” As fellow Catholics and legislators, we wish you would have made a more honest effort to lay out the authentic position of the Church on this core moral issue before attempting to address it with authority.

Your subsequent remarks mangle Catholic Church doctrine regarding the inherent sanctity and dignity of human life; therefore, we are compelled to refute your error.

In the interview, Tom Brokaw reminded you that the Church professes the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. As stated in the *Catechism of the Catholic Church*: “Since it must be treated from conception as a person, the embryo must be defended in its integrity, cared for, and healed, as far as possible, like any other human being” (2274).

To this, you responded, “I understand. And this is like maybe 50 years or something like that. So again, over the history of the Church, this is an issue of controversy.” Unfortunately, your statement demonstrates a lack of understanding of Catholic teaching and belief regarding abortion.

From the Apostles of the first century to Pope John Paul the Great “the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law” (*Catechism *2271).

Thus, your erroneous claim about the history of the Church’s opposition to abortion is false and denigrates our common Faith. For example, during the reign of Pope Innocent XI in 1679, the Church unequivocally stated it is an error for Catholics to believe a fetus does not have a soul; and confirmed the teaching that abortion constitutes an unjustified taking of innocent human life.

To reduce the scandal and consternation caused amongst the faithful by your remarks, we necessarily write you to correct the public record and affirm the Church’s actual and historical teaching that defends the sanctity of human life. We hope that you will rectify your errant claims and apologize for misrepresenting the Church’s doctrine and misleading fellow Catholics.

Respectfully,

Thaddeus McCotter

Detroit is poorest big city in U.S.

August 27, 2008 at 8:11 pm (Uncategorized)

Michigan Only State With Poverty Level Rise

BY MEGHA SATYANARAYANA and KRISTI TANNER • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITERS • August 27, 2008

Detroit is the poorest large city in the country, according to the 2007 U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey, released Tuesday.

The number of poor people in the city grew slightly, from 32.5% in 2006 to 33.8% in 2007. Detroit was compared with other cities of 250,000 or more.

But the city was not the only place that grew poorer. Michigan was the only state in the nation to see any increase in its poverty level, from 13.5% in 2006 to 14% in 2007. The increase means there are now 1,377,000 people living below the federal poverty line, which is defined as $20,650 annually for a household of four.

Click here to see a chart measuring poverty in Michigan

Other findings reinforce the stark difference between urban and suburban life in Michigan. For example, West Bloomfield’s median household income of $98,832 ranked it among the highest in the country for communities with populations of 65,000 to 250,000. Flint’s median household income ranked among the bottom 10 at $26,143, barely above poverty. Troy’s poverty rate was among the lowest in the nation at 3.1%.

The American Community Survey is a yearly survey that provides economic, social, demographic and housing information for the nation. The data can be found at www.census.gov.

The survey also showed that almost one in five Michigan children lives in poverty, but in Detroit, Pontiac and Flint, nearly half the children are poor.

Dillon Recall Apparently Isn’t Dead

August 27, 2008 at 8:05 pm (Uncategorized)

Email for the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance:

Speaker Dillon loses court battle, faces November recall

This morning, Federal U.S. District Court Judge Robert Holmes Bell issued an injunction that will likely result in Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon facing recall in the November election.

The Michigan Secretary of State had determined in May that the petition effort by Rose Bogaert and the Wayne County Taxpayers Association to recall Speaker Dillon for raising taxes had fallen 776 signatures short of the 8,724 signatures required. But 2,053 signatures were disqualified because the petition circulator was not a registered voter in the 17th House District represented by Dillon, as required by state law.

Judge Bell ruled that Michigan’s laws restricting recall petition circulators’ residency and registered voter status are unconstitutional violations of the First Amendment’s guaranteed right to free speech.

Judge Bell further ordered the Michigan Secretary of State to re-count the 2,053 previously rejected signatures and, if at least 776 were otherwise valid, to place the question of recalling Speaker Dillon on the November election ballot.

“This is a huge win for the rights of Michigan citizens,” stated Leon Drolet, Executive Director of the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance, who supported the recall effort. “Politicians are at-will employees of the citizens. Speaker Dillon raised taxes, then fought to deny citizen’s constitutional right to hold him accountable for his actions. This is a win for everyday citizens and taxpayers and a blow to Dillon and the Lansing political establishment.”

His Emminence Archbishop Wuerl Corrects Pelosi on Church Abortion Position

August 26, 2008 at 3:56 am (Uncategorized)

Washington archbishop rips Pelosi on abortion

Posted: 08/25/08 11:29 PM [ET]
In a rare public rebuke of a top politician, the archbishop of Washington said Monday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) was incorrect when she recently said the moment of conception has long been a matter of controversy within the Catholic Church.

In a release issued Monday night, Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl said Pelosi’s comments on “Meet the Press” on Sunday “were incorrect.”

Wuerl noted that Pelosi responded to a question on when life begins by mentioning she was Catholic.

The release quoted Pelosi as saying the church has not been able to make a definition of when life begins.

“After Mr. Tom Brokaw, the interviewer, pointed out that the Catholic Church feels strongly that life begins at conception, she replied, ‘I understand. And this is, like, maybe 50 years or something like that. So again, over the history of the church, this is an issue of controversy,’ ” the release said.

Wuerl strongly disagrees.

He said, “We respect the right of elected officials such as Speaker Pelosi to address matters of public policy that are before them, but the interpretation of Catholic faith has rightfully been entrusted to the Catholic bishops. Given this responsibility to teach, it is important to make this correction for the record.”

Wuerl pointed out that the Catechism of the Catholic Church is clear, and has been clear for 2,000 years. He cited Catechism language that reads, “Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception … Since the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely contrary to the moral law.”

A Pelosi spokesman did not immediately comment for this article.

The Speaker recently said she, unlike other Catholic politicians who support abortion rights, has not clashed with her church about receiving communion.

In an interview on C-SPAN that aired earlier this month, Pelosi was asked about how some church officials have raised objections about whether former presidential contenders — such as Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) — should receive communion.

Pelosi, a Roman Catholic whose district includes most of San Francisco, said she has not encountered such difficulties in her church.

“I think some of it is regional,” she said, “It depends on the bishop of a certain region, and, fortunately for me, communion has not been withheld and I’m a regular communicant, so that would be a severe blow to me if that were the case.”

Tim Walberg whips Republican convention into a frenzy

August 23, 2008 at 10:41 pm (7th Congressional Distirct)

I just returned from the Michigan Republican convention where delegates from every county in the state nominated Cliff Taylor for another term on the State Supreme Court. Politcal newcomer John LaFond edged out Carl Meyers in the race for UofM Regent.

Representative Jack Hoogendyk chaired the convention while Anuzis in Abraham were elected at large Presidential electors.

Congressman Tim Walberg whipped the convention into a frenzy with his speech on Pelosi & Co going on break while urgent energy issues need to be resolved. Walberg was energetic and the people could feel it as they were standing and clapping nearly the entire time he was speaking. (No other officials received that level of applause.)

Walberg is a great conservative and we all must do our part in making sure that he retains his seat in the US House of Representatives.

From Gongwer:
Probably the most excited the delegates got during the entire convention was in response to U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Tipton) as he described Republican efforts on the floor of the U.S. House to get the chamber back in session to vote on energy legislation.

Mr. Walberg got the cheering delegates to their feet as he described GOP congressional members speaking on the floor of the chamber while the House was on recess, and he urged them to call U.S. Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office demanding she bring the House back in. And some delegates did pull out their cell phones as Mr. Walberg read off Ms. Pelosi’s number and made the call.

Dr Zeile was nominated to run for the State Board of Education. Zeile is a candidate with the highest caliber of integrity and I am happy to see he won.

I don’t believe Mike Cox, Joe Knollenberg, Chuck Yob and Holly Hughes were in attendance.

David Boaz, Executive Vice President of the Cato Institute, is coming to Michigan September 11 and 12

August 22, 2008 at 4:05 am (Uncategorized)

He will be speaking on: “The Politics of Freedom”

Is it any wonder that Americans have become increasingly dissatisfied with government? Soaring spending, corruption, incompetence and intrusions into our personal lives at the local, state and federal levels leave many frustrated. Boaz discusses these themes — and his optimistic view for the future of civil and economic liberties — in his new book, The Politics of Freedom, and will be speaking on the subject at three different venues in Michigan.

In his speech he will take on liberals and conservatives who seek to impose their partisan agendas on the country and highlight how the future of freedom will require Americans to devote considerable effort to preserving and protecting their rights.

You are cordially invited to the following events:

UofM Regent Race

August 22, 2008 at 3:36 am (Uncategorized)

A few days ago, UofM Regent candidate Carl Meyers sent out an email preempting a supposed attack by young activists. I believe that the email was referring to Matt Hall (MIGOP Youth Chair), and Matt Golden (LaFond  for UofM Regent) campaign consultant.

This prompted Meyers to send out an email stating his conservative position on a host of issues. Matt Golden denies that any attacks were made and said that he believes LaFond is the better choice, and that it’s, “Time for a Change.” Calls to Hall were not returned.

What do we know about Carl Meyers? He has been active in the party for decades. Most everyone is aware of his credentials which is why every single district chair in the state is supporting him, along with over 60 county chairs.

What do we know about John Lafond? As best as I can tell, he is a relative newcomer, with his activism dating back to a couple of weeks ago. Lafond was a write in candidate for precinct delegate and doesn’t seem to have much under his belt as far as aiding the cause.

I couldn’t find any donations that he has made to Republican candidates; only donations to the House Democrats which appear to be given by his wife.

In 2008, the Democrats nominated the rock star for President while the Republicans chose the man who has put in his time. Michigan Republicans should do the same, and nominate Carl Meyers for UofM Regent on the first ballot.

Richard Viguerie to McCain

August 20, 2008 at 8:54 pm (McCain)

An Open Letter from Richard Viguerie to John McCain:
Conservatives Can Also Play the Maverick Game
(Manassas, Virginia) The following is an open letter from Richard A. Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, to Senator John McCain in regard to news reports that the Republican presidential candidate may select a vice presidential running mate who supports abortions rights:
Dear Senator McCain:
The buzz in recent days has been that some of your key aides were calling national and state GOP leaders to alert them to the possibility that you were seriously considering a pro-abortion running mate and to take their temperature on such a selection.
As Dan Henninger of the Wall Street Journal asked: Are you politically “stupid” or do you care little for conservative principles?
It also shows that you don’t understand why the Republican brand has taken a massive beating in recent years. You clearly don’t comprehend why millions of conservatives are off the Republican reservation and sitting on the political sidelines.
Your indication that you’re willing to put a person who has a clear, unequivocal pro-abortion record within a heartbeat of the presidency is alarming.
Pro-life conservatives understand that, to change the laws to protect innocent life, first and foremost, we need good, articulate leadership–from the president and vice president.
To put it as simply and clearly as I can, most Republican leaders at the national and state level have betrayed, abandoned, and sold out the principles that define conservatism. Talk of selecting a pro-abortion liberal Republican (Tom Ridge) or, even worse, a pro-abortion liberal Democrat (Joe Lieberman) drives the Republican brand lower and lower.
Your apparent interest in selecting a running mate who is out of sync ideologically with the vast majority of conservatives reinforces the image of the Republican Party as a party without principle and dedicated to one proposition above all others – the seeking, acquiring, obtaining, and holding onto power.
Senator McCain, you are exceedingly proud of being a political maverick – you wear it as a badge of honor.
Well, poke the base of the Republican Party – the conservatives – in the eye one more time by choosing a pro-abortion vice presidential candidate and conservatives will show you that two can play the maverick game.
Conservatives are people with proudly held principles. We’re now waiting to see if you share our principles.
Sincerely,
Richard A. Viguerie

Obama supports infanticide

August 20, 2008 at 8:44 pm (Obama)

http://www.pinknews.co.uk/images/catholicleague.jpg

OBAMA, NARAL AND INFANTICIDE

Catholic League president Bill Donohue speaks to the growing interest in Sen. Barack Obama’s abortion record:

“The pro-life community has been tracking Obama’s support for selective infanticide for quite a while, but only recently has there been a national discussion on this issue. On May 15, I said on ‘Fox and Friends’ that ‘There’s been a media cover-up on this [issue].’ But now the cat’s out of the bag.

“Last night on ‘Hannity and Colmes’ Bob Beckel tried to argue that neither Obama nor NARAL supports the selective killing of infants. Yet the bill that would offer protection to children who survived abortions is precisely what Obama opposed when he was in the Illinois state senate. As for NARAL, it initially opposed the bill when it was introduced in 2000 and then lied about it; in 2002, after it became clear that NARAL had no support from pro-abortion congressmen and senators, it changed its position.

“On July 20, 2000, NARAL issued a news release, Roe v. Wade Faces Renewed Assault in House: Anti-Choice Lawmakers Hold Hearing On So-Called ‘Born Alive Infants Protection Act.’ The news release stated that NARAL was opposed to the bill introduced by Rep. Charles Canady. Yet on October 29, 2000, NARAL’s New York executive director Kelli Conlin told WNBC-TV’s Gabe Pressman that NARAL was not opposed to the bill. I told her on the show that she was ‘an out-and-out liar’ and mailed her and Pressman the evidence following the show. Neither replied.

“It’s quite clear what’s going on: the radical pro-abortionists—and no one is more radical than Obama and NARAL—will even defend selective infanticide if there is one chance in a million that it will chip away at Roe v. Wade. Incredibly, even NARAL eventually dropped its opposition to the bill, something Obama never did (his campaign now admits that the wording of the Illinois bill and the federal bill were virtually identical). Which means that when it comes to abortion, Obama wins the Gold.”

Poll says Americans think Bob Barr should be included in debates

August 20, 2008 at 11:04 am (Bob Barr)

Presidential debate outrage! Libertarian Bob Barr wants in — and a poll majority agrees

Here’s a good one: Just because former Republican Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia is the official candidate for president of the Libertarian Party, he thinks he should be included in this fall’s televised presidential debates.

Can you imagine? A third party muscling in on theFormer Republican Rep Bob Barr of Georgia is now the Libertarian Party candidate for president and wants to join the presidential debates this fall political duopoly of the Republicans and Democrats?

Shades of Republican Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who was in a bunch of GOP primary debates last winter but was barred by Fox News from participating in its New Hampshire debate just before the voting there.

Even though Paul had garnered more votes and raised more money than some of the better-known Republicans who were included.

Paul, who was the Libertarian presidential candidate back in 1988, has given up on the Republican presidential nomination now. He is unopposed for reelection to the House, is out selling his no-longer-new book and is planning a counter-convention near the GOP gathering in St. Paul, Minn., in 12 days. Meanwhile, today he turns 73.

But now there’s an absolutely outrageous public opinion poll out showing …

… that many Americans — a majority, in fact — think Barr should be included in the presidential debates. Just like the grownups Barack Obama and John McCain!

What in the world for? Millions of Americans would be dangerously exposed to another point of view. How could busy voters possibly decide among three or even four candidates? Is that what presidential campaigns have come down to now? A diversity of opinion?

Whatever happened to old-fashioned criteria like who has the most money or who looks prettiest on TV?

Most voters — fully 55% — say Barr should be included in the fall series of presidential debates, according to Zogby Interactive.

Not quite as many — 45% — say that other old guy, independent candidate Ralph Nader, should also be included.

Among political independents, sentiment for a third or fourth point of view on stage in the nationally televised debates runs strong: 69% say Barr should share the stage with Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona and Democratic nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.

Big surprise: Democrats and Republicans, however, are less willing to share the stage: 39% of Democrats surveyed told Zogby that Barr should be included, and 41% of Republicans surveyed said so.

The younger the voter, the more the support for Barr’s voice.

The Barr campaign professes itself “heartened to learn that most voters don’t buy into the ’spoiler’ argument being espoused by partisan talking heads.” That’s how Russell Verney, campaign manager for Barr and former campaign manager for H. Ross Perot, puts it.

Verney adds: “People want real change, and they know that they are not going to get it from a Republican or a Democrat. America’s only hope for change is by allowing more competition in the political process, and that means opening the debates to any candidate who can meet the ballot access criteria.”

Our blogging buddy Mark Silva has more on this unbelievable story over at the Swamp.

Blackwell recruiting conservative activists

August 19, 2008 at 10:47 pm (Uncategorized)

Dear Conservative friend,Would you, or someone you know, like a successful career as a conservative activist? Do you hope to one day manage a campaign or run for office yourself?

I am on the hunt for college students or recent college graduates whose conservative policy careers I can launch this fall.

I hope you, or a friend of yours, will be one of them.

I know you might be familiar with The Leadership Institute – the non-profit I founded in 1979 to train conservatives how to win elections.

Perhaps you might also know that I created Conservative Leadership PAC in 1972, long before I founded The Leadership Institute. CLPAC directly helps conservative Republican candidates, which is something LI cannot legally do.

Every campaign cycle, I carefully select the most promising young conservative activists to be youth coordinators for the most hotly contested Congressional and statewide races in the country. CLPAC identifies top-notch conservative Republican candidates in tight races and sends youth coordinators to help them run a successful mass-based youth effort.

In recent elections, CLPAC has placed youth coordinators with U.S. Senators Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint as well as Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

Youth coordinators spend two and a half months on the ground, honing their political skills and preparing for a lifetime of leadership.

Youth coordinators are deployed in mid to late August and work full-time through the November election. Their objective is to get youth votes and volunteers for their candidate by utilizing the techniques taught in the Youth Leadership School.

Those selected will help conservative Republicans in tight races across the country. The liberals are counting on winning the White House as well as supermajorities in the House and Senate. I hope you will help me to stop them.

Very few activists graduate college with paid campaign experience under their belt. If you’re looking to work full-time in politics after graduation, the best way to get ahead of your competition is to have paid experience on your resumé.

If you’re still in college, I urge you not to pass on a golden opportunity just for the sake of graduating in exactly four years. College credits do not have an expiration date. Take it from me – when it comes to evaluating job applicants, experience matters most.

Completion of a mass-based youth campaign is resumé gold. Of the youth coordinators I have placed over the past 36 years, many have gone on to manage successful campaigns for Republican Governors, members of the United States Senate and numerous Congressmen.

Youth coordinators have used the experience to launch rewarding careers in:
• Grassroots Activism
• Campaigns for public office
• Political appointments
• Capitol Hill staff
• Lobbying
• Long-term employment with the Leadership Institute
• Good jobs in other conservative organizations

I should mention that a major benefit of this position is that each campaign provides housing free-of-charge to the youth coordinator.

Youth coordinators are also paid for the use of his/her vehicle or are provided one if they do not already have their own.

Along with free housing, free use of a vehicle and all campaign expenses paid (including cell phone), the youth coordinator earns $1,000/month – enough to cover food and other personal expenses and still have plenty left over.

McCotter protests Russian embassy

August 19, 2008 at 10:43 pm (US House Republicans)

McCotter Leads Demonstration in Front of the Russian Embassy

Mccotter_russia

Congressman Thaddeus McCotter joined hundreds of demonstrators in front of the Russian Embassy in Washington D.C. to condemn the brutal attack on the independent Republic of Georgia. The actions of Russia show its true colors. It wants to restore its control over the countries on its borders and will use whatever means to do so. The United States’ reaction to these events is critical to the stability and freedom of all countries formerly under Soviet occupation. The United States must immediately begin work with Europe and NATO to show Russia that its actions jeopardize its standing and relations in the world of free nations. The United States must also implement all meaningful sanctions against Russia. Further, the United States must work with all East and Central European countries to jointly strengthen their ability to maintain their democracies and gains achieved since their independence. Michael Reagan on the Georgian Conflict. Conservatives are waking up

August 19, 2008 at 5:53 am (Uncategorized)

Michael Reagan
Why Are We Surprised?
08/15/2008

In any struggle between the dreamers and the realists, the realists always win.

We’re seeing that played out right now as the supreme realist of our time, Vladimir Putin, not only is running circles around the dreamers of the West, but is also making them look like a bunch of incompetent ninnies.

Putin is playing the role of Vlad the Impaler, and the heads he is displaying atop Red Army bayonets as he marches through Georgia — a la Gen. Sherman — are those of the leaders of what used to be called the Free World.
Continued

We should have seen it coming, but we were too busy with George Bush’s dreams of a democracy-drenched world — and Western Europe’s preoccupation with the destruction of all vestiges of its Christian past — to notice what Vlad has been up to as he goes about creating the latest version of a czarist imperialist Russia itching to expand its borders.

As the always-perceptive Ralph Peters wrote in the New York Post, Putin’s latest venture “not only sized up President Bush humiliatingly well, but precisely anticipated Europe’s nonreaction — while taking a perfect-fit measure of Georgia’s mercurial president.”

Putin, he added, “not only knew what he was doing — he knew exactly what others would do” an example, Peters wrote, of “intelligence work at the hall-of-fame level. (For our part, we had all the intelligence pieces in our hands and failed to assemble the puzzle.)”

Peters recalled the signs that were always there for the CIA to see, had they been able to recognize what was taking place right under their noses — “the months of meticulous planning and extensive preparations for this invasion [that] were covered by military exercises, disingenuous explanations — and maskirovka, the art of deception the Red Army had mastered.”

The result? “The Russians convinced us to see what we wanted to see.”

The reaction of all of this by the Bush administration and our Western allies has been to run around like headless chickens. We have been shown exactly how it feels to be rendered impotent in the face of a determined opponent that doesn’t care what the rest of the world thinks of him.

There are a lot of lessons to be drawn from this, but for Americans one of the most important ones concerns the current debate on energy. Nobody seems to have noticed that the crisis in Georgia points out once again just how dependent we are on getting much of our oil from areas of the world where turmoil is rampant.

A vital oil pipeline runs through Georgia, for example. One word from Putin and it shuts down.

In the face of all this, when we need desperately to take advantage of the vast stores of oil that lie beneath our feet and off our shores waiting to be exploited, we allow the Democrats to place all that petroleum off-limits as they have since the Clinton administration all but banned drilling.

They scoff at the vast majority of Americans who are demanding that we drill and drill now, using the lame excuse that it will take years before the oil here can be brought to the surface and refined and supplied to the nation’s gas pumps.

Instead they dream of presently unavailable alternative sources of energy that may never become realities, and in any case are years in the future.

Realists don’t dream. They recognize that if we start to drill now, sometime in the not too distant future — two, three five or even ten years from now — America will have all the oil we’ll ever need and we won’t have to worry about what Vladimir Putin or Iran’s President Ahmadinejad are doing to threaten our oil supplies.

If we listen to the dreamers ten years from now we’ll still be waiting for the promised age of alternative energy to get off the ground — and we’ll still be dependent on foreign oil at only God knows how much per gallon.
