Hunter Visited Michigan
It doesn’t appear that Duncan Hunter’s Michigan campaign stop received any press attention (yet). I did however find this blog post about the visit.

Detroit, MI – Republican Presidential Candidate Duncan Hunter gave a tangible demonstration of his support for U.S. manufacturers in a campaign stop in Detroit today. On a mid-morning visit to Suburban Ford in Sterling Heights, MI., Hunter made good on his “Buy American” platform. He bought American by driving off with a brand new Ford F-150 pick-up truck.

Garfield Arrested For Second Drunk Driving
Rep. John GARFIELD (R-Rochester Hills) was arrested this morning for drunk driving, MIRS has confirmed, marking the second time in 18 months the Republican has been stopped for such an offense.
Garfield, 57, was picked up by the Michigan State University (MSU) Police early this morning and booked in the Ingham County jail at 3:26 a.m. He was released at 12:23 p.m. on a personal recognizance bond. He did not show up for House session this afternoon.
The MSU Police blotter listed only one drunk driving arrest today, that happening at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Kensington. However, the MSU Police could provide no further information on the arrest.
Garfield staffer Dave JESSUP said he had no details on the arrest, outside of that it occurred and that the third-term House member was heading home to deal with personal issues.
The arrest marked the second time Garfield has been arrested for drunk driving. During the first incident, Garfield admitted he was battling alcoholism and was checking himself into a rehabilitation center (See “Garfield Arrested On Drunk Driving Charge,” 9/20/2005).

DROLET TAX PROTEST
Subject: Governor and Taxspenders to Taxpayers: GAME ON!
Governor and Taxspenders to Taxpayers: GAME ON!
Last week, a Lansing reporter informed me that a Governor’s staffer had toldhim that the Gov was aware of the April 18 Taxpayer Teabag protest plannedat the Capitol – and was preparing a “surprise” for protesters.
What “surprise”?
Turns out that the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) have moved up theirlobby day in Lansing to coincide with our tax protest. They supportGranholm’s plan to mandate government preschool for all children. And theyare not alone. An organization called “Artserve”, which supports more taxdollars being spent on art, has also changed the day and time of their lobbyday to April 18.
It appears those that demand more and more spending and higher taxes willtry to outdo taxpayers that day. According to the AFT Michigan website, theyare planning to bus public school teachers in from around the state.
It is now even more important than ever to spread the word to all taxpayersabout the Taxpayer Protest Rally! Everyday taxpayers need to show up at theCapitol in Lansing on April 18, bring a teabag that we will deliver to theGovernor, and tell Lansing politicians to balance their budget by cuttingspending and enacting reforms; NOT BY RAISING TAXES ON CITIZENS! Get to theCapitol around 10:00am. Rally starts at 11:00am, but you will need time topark.
Taxspenders are planning to hijack this rally, and demand more and more ofYOUR money. We cannot allow the voices of everyday taxpayers to be drownedout. Take the day off work, clear the calendar, gather your family andfriends, and head to Lansing on April 18!

MIRS Update
GOP Considering Primary Change
Michigan Republican Party (MRP) Chairman Saul ANUZIS sent an e-mail to state and county Republican chairs today telling them the MRP might bump up its presidential primary dates.
Currently, Michigan is looking at being apart of the “Super Duper Tuesday” election date of Feb. 5, 2008, when California and nearly half of the states in the union are expected to hold their primaries. However, with South Carolina having its election Feb. 2 and Florida looking at Jan. 29, Michigan may join either state in its attempt to stay relevant in the presidential selection process.
“It’s critical that Michigan Republicans play a significant and early role in helping our party determine who will be our nominee for President in 2008,” Anuzis wrote. “The economic crisis unique to our state demands that we select a nominee intimately familiar with our circumstances and challenges we face in Michigan.”
Anuzis said the party remains in negotiation with the Michigan Democratic Party on legislation that would allow the two parties to vote on the same day as part of a “semi-closed” primary election. However, the party is prepared to move on its own if necessary, he said.

Horn Offers Up Corporate Activities Tax
Rep. Ken HORN (R-Frankenmuth) announced his own Single Business Tax (SBT) replacement plan that replaces $1.5 billion of the $1.9 billion the state will lose when the SBT expires at the end of the year.
Under Horn’s Michigan Corporate Activities Tax combines a tax and personal property tax credit system, which he said is supported by the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, the Detroit Chamber of Commerce and the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce. Horn said the MCAT is the most tested proposal, and its solid language will stand up to any potential legal challenges.

Tancredo: U.S. should stand by famed bounty hunter
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.) is questioning the legality of the ongoing extradition of bounty hunter and cable TV personality Duane “Dog” Chapman to Mexico. The lawmaker Wednesday contacted Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about the case.“News reports have come to light showing that the extradition agreement between the U.S. and Mexico may be nothing more than a wink and a nod between governments,” said Tancredo, who is running for president. “I hope that Secretary Rice looks into whether this agreement has the legal force before extraditing a man who put away a serial rapist.”> Read More

MICHIGANLong since the home of interesting electoral politics, Michigan did not disappoint. The days of Ryan Cassin and Joe Sylvester are long gone but not the broken hearts. Justin Zatkoff (of bruised and battered fame) vows to “heal” the organization. We all know contested elections are fun, but when the guy who knows what a real beating feels like is calling for healing – you better listen.

LSA junior elected to head state College Republicans
By Alese Bagdol 3/28/07
Justin Zatkoff’s 20th birthday celebration Saturday included more than presents and cake. The LSA junior was elected chairman of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans by a vote of 118 to 64. “I missed the moment that the official numbers came in,” Zatkoff said. “I was running around because all my friends were singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to me. It was very exciting.” The Michigan Federation of College Republicans is an umbrella organization for the College Republican chapters at universities around the state.Zatkoff said he thinks his election will change the University’s political climate. “We are going to reinvigorate the College Republicans here on campus,” he said. “Hopefully, we will get presidential candidates to come speak at the University.”
Zatkoff, who previously served as executive director, said he has a lot of work to do now that he has been elected chairman. He said his first goal is to eliminate infighting within the College Republicans. “I have quite a job ahead of me,” Zatkoff said. “The College Republicans are extremely divided.” He said these divisions stem from disagreements over which candidate the group should support in next year’s presidential primary.Yesterday, Zatkoff endorsed Arizona Sen. John McCain for president in a press release. Zatkoff received criticism for his choice to back McCain from many of the people that backed Zatkoff’s opponent, Michigan State University student Steve Japinga. “Several of (Japinga’s) backers, who are Romney supporters, don’t like me,” Zatkoff said. “There is always drama in elections.” But Zatkoff encouraged members of the College Republicans to support the candidate of their choosing. He said his main priority is helping elect a Republican president in the 2008 election.
Note: In the above interview, Justin had told the Michigan Daily that the CR election was about Presidential politics. The day of convention, he told MIRs News that the CR election had nothing to do with Presidential politics.
College GOP Say Presidential Politics Not Issue
College Republicans say an attempt to oust its chairman at a convention this weekend had more to do with personalities than presidential politics. At the Federation of College Republicans, several delegates called for a vote of no confidence against Dan CARLSON, the organization’s chairman. The vote was denied because the meeting had already been adjourned. There was some speculation that the vote was called because Carlson is a supporter of U.S. Sen. John McCAIN’s (R-Ariz.) bid for president while others in the organization support former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt ROMNEY. However, those involved in the vote said that was not the case. “I’m not anti-anybody,” said Steve JAPINGA who was running for chairman. “We all need to come together and win this thing. These were just personal things that were going on.” Apparently, Japinga and others aren’t happy with the way Carlson’s has handled some issues. Japinga called for the vote about half an hour after the meeting adjourned. He said he had support from several members, but was told the vote couldn’t take place because they’d already adjourned. Japinga said he waited to call the vote until the guest speakers finished talking. Japinga ran against Justin ZATKOFF for the chairmanship. Zatkoff agreed that the tiff was a personal problem. He said the vote wasn’t called because it was called an after adjournment, when most people had already gone home. “There were only two or three other people who wanted to do it,” Zatkoff said. “Other than that, we had been adjourned for an hour so there really was no basis for it and I stand by our leadership.” Zatkoff will be taking over the chairmanship in August.

Romney, Giuliani, McCain pick up congressional endorsements
Top-tier Republican presidential candidates Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and John McCain picked up congressional endorsements over the weekend, adding to their growing lists of supporters on Capitol Hill. Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) said Saturday that Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, would keep America secure and its economy growing if elected to the presidency.“We are fighting wars on many fronts — from the war against violent Islamic jihadists around the world to the war on government spending here at home,” Conaway wrote Saturday in an op-ed that appeared in the Midland (Texas) Reporter-Telegram. “We need our next president to have the experience necessary to keep Americans safe and our economy prosperous.” Read More
Waxman wants RNC, Bush campaign to preserve e-mails

Conservative Groups to Host Controversial Anti-Illegal Immigration Speaker
YAF and CRs to Host Minuteman President Chris Simcox
East Lansing, Mich. – Young Americans for Freedom and the College Republicans are co-sponsoring an event together in which Minuteman President Chris Simcox will speak about the perils that America faces because of illegal immigration. His group, the Minutemen, were called “Vigilantes” by El Presidente George Bush, but still enjoy widespread support from the American people.
Chris Simcox will speak at MSU on Thursday, April 19, from 7-9pm.
The last event the College Republicans and YAF co-sponsored together was when Congressman Tom Tancredo came to campus to talk about the same issue – illegal immigration. Radical leftists from the groups La Raza, MEChA, and SEJ acted like savages in which they slashed tires, keyed a car, pulled fire alarms twice, assaulted a 7-month pregnant woman, spat on people, and kicked a person in the back. 911 was called by the College Republicans and the police eventually got control of the situation.
When Minuteman co-founder Jim Gilchrist spoke at Columbia University, leftist thugs disrupted the event by storming the stage. MSU police will likely be at the upcoming event to prevent violence and disruption.
Kyle Bristow, the Chairman of YAF said: “Illegal immigration is a serious issue and needs to be discussed. We hope that it will be discussed without leftist thugs disrupting the event.”
YAF is a conservative, non-partisan organization. See YAF’s website at http://www.msu.edu/~yaf. YAF’s blog can be seen at www.SpartanSpectator.com.

ZATKOFF ENDORSES SEN. MCCAIN

Naive?
By State TAR Chairman Brent A. Stanton -
What the real problem is with Michigan Republican Party Youth- A real question. A question that has yet to be answered to my satisfaction. The question? It can be a question, but it’s more like a problem. I can tell you, there is definitely a problem. This problem, our problem, is not the problem that countless Republican leaders have identified as the reasoning for the 2006 election catastrophe for Republicans nation-wide. It’s not that we, the basis of the Republican party, have lost focus of our Republican values. No, no, no. That’s not the problem at all.
Our problem: Mutiny and in-fighting. On February 10, 2007, Matt Hall was elected Youth Vice Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. As GOP activists took sides between Matt Hall and Trevor Pittsley (way before Grand Rapids ever came along) a inner-battle between Michigan Republicans was born. It’s debated to this day (almost 2 months after the election) how much Hall won by or how little Pittsley lost by. But my point is, Hall won. Fair-and-square.
On Sunday March 24th, College Republicans from around our Great Lakes state gathered at the campus of Michigan State University to take part in democracy. There were several races up for grabs between, but there was one that stood out above the rest, as the Chairman’s race normally does. Steve Japinga, the Senior from Michigan State University, or Justin Zatkoff, the U-of-M transfer student, originally from Oakland University. Zatkoff ended up being victorious, and Japinga went home empty handed. Japinga supporters constantly say that Zatkoff cheated and Hall/Carlson were behind the fraudulent delegate lists. That’s a mute point now. Remember, Zatkoff won.
So this brings me to my final part of this opinion-editorial letter that informs us of the problems we face within our own circle of fellow conservatives. Hall has won. That’s a done deal. To the people who think that you can draw up some petition or demand that Hall resign; you’re crazy and you need to stop it. Constantly, I read on the Michigan Conservative Dossier, people want to know how to impeach Hall, how to impeach Zatkoff. Michigan Republican Party
Chairman Saul Anuzis has said he WILL NOT remove Hall from office. But here in lies the problem. People don’t know when to quit. When to give up and fall behind the ranking officer. We will not accomplish ONE THING if we continue this ridiculous in-fighting for Youth Vice Chair and CR Chair. Sure, I’m only a Teenage Republican, and we’re only Teenage Republicans. We don’t have the experience and knowledge that the CRs do, but I can tell you something the TARS have over the CRs. Maturity. We have 10x the maturity the Michigan College Republicans have.
And a message to all those College Republicans reading this letter, I don’t care if you like me. I don’t care if you support me and or what I do as Chairman. You know why? I was elected. That’s it. I was elected by a simple majority of those who cast a ballot for Teenage Republicans Chairman and the people who didn’t want me, they’ll live with me for the next 2 years because they want a Republican in the White House, and the Senate and the House. What do the Michigan Republican Youth not get about the idea that our leadership, is there to lead us? Our leaders have been chosen, and it would be best if we all just stopped crying, stopped petitioning, stopped recall drives, stopped impeachment hearings and fell behind our chosen leadership.
Please, we all know better than this. We all know better than to fight with our friends. But here, I promise you, if we all work together, the Japinga-cronies, the Zatkoff-cronies, the Hall-cronies and the Pittsley-cronies, we will guarantee ourselves victory in 2008. Whether you like them or not, I’m asking you today to stop the nonsense, and work with Saul Anuzis, work with Matt Hall and Justin Zatkoff, work with me and let’s work with each other and let’s look forward to gathering in Washington on January 20, 2009, standing together, as one Michigan Republican Party.
Thank you and God Bless,
Brent A. Stanton

COLLEGE REPUBLICANS ATTEMPT TO OUTST CHAIRMAN
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EAST LANSING, Mich. (March 24, 2007) – Over 50 delegates at the Michigan Federation of College Republicans Convention on Saturday were prevented from introducing a resolution calling for a no-confidence vote in Dan Carlson, the organization’s chairman.
Carlson, backed by Michigan Republican Party youth chairman Matt Hall and McCain’s team headed by the Yob political machine, was nearly ousted Saturday afternoon after Steve Japinga (Michigan State University) and others attempted to call the MFCR General Assembly back into session and introduce a no-confidence resolution.
But the resolution failed after Carlson refused to allow them on the floor, saying the “convention is adjourned” even though Congressman Thaddeus McCotter, state Rep. Kevin Green and former U.S. Senate candidate Jerry Zandstra were all present and taking turns addressing a sufficient quorum of delegates.
Alma College, Calvin College, Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University MSU and WMU supported Japinga’s efforts.

Pre Convention Parties
Friday night we attended Jeff Wiggins’ party. There was 50 people or so. They provided several kegs for the guests.
There was a petition going to around calling for Matt Hall to resign. Most people were happy to sign at the Wiggins party.
At 2am we left to go to the Governors Inn where Justin Zatkoff and his delegates were staying. It was fairly dead with the exception of the delegation from Oakland University. Right when we walked into the hotel we knew where the party was at. Koss and Co were drinking Strohs and listening to Hank.
Somehow we aquired a room key ant 6am and went downstairs to the room. But Eric Schaefer and Eric Ventimiglia were in it.
