Young Republicans to Rally for Troops on Eve of Bush SpeechNathan BurchfielCorrespondent(CNSNews.com) – On the eve of President Bush’s sixth State of the Union speech Tuesday, hundreds of College Republicans around the country plan to rally in support of his stay-the-course strategy in Iraq.Several hundred students are expected to gather Monday night in Washington, D.C., where Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will address the first “Finish the Job, Support the Troops” rally. More than 100 local chapters of the College Republican National Committee (CRNC) will also host “watch parties” Tuesday night so students can watch and discuss the speech.CRNC President Paul Gourley said College Republicans support Bush’s “prudent and well-timed withdrawal of forces, which will engender long-term success.” He criticized congressional Democrats, like U.S. Rep. John Murtha, who Gourley said is among those who “advocate a hasty retreat.”
Gourley told Cybercast News Service that Monday’s rally would not be negative and declined to comment further on leaders of the anti-war movement. “We want to be as positive and supportive of the troops as possible,” he said, “so I don’t think we’re going to take time to necessarily play politics and take shots.”He said he does expect protests of the event and that “we support free speech for everyone, even those who disagree with the president’s policy on staying the course. At the same time, I hope they realize that free speech is one of the very same rights that the president is working to provide for the Iraqi people.”According to Democratic National Committee (DNC) spokeswoman Amaya Smith, “several local chapters of the College Dems” will also be holding watch parties, but no central rally is planned by the group. The DNC is sponsoring watch parties across the country Tuesday night, and Smith said college students are encouraged to attend those events.Liberals will also hold a “World Can’t Wait – Drive Out the Bush Regime” protest rally near the Capitol reflecting pool during the speech Tuesday night.Make media inquiries or request an interview with Nathan Burchfiel.Subscribe to the free CNSNews.com daily E-brief.E-mail a comment or news tip to Nathan Burchfiel.Send a Letter to the Editor about this article.
Zandstra Challenges Bouchard on MCRI
Zandstra Challenges Bouchard On MCRIToday, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Jerry ZANDSTRA challenged Mike BOUCHARD to defend his opposition to Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI) at the Feb. 1 “Toward a Fair Michigan” forum at Oakland University.”Republicans do best when we stick to our principles rather than stick our finger in the air to gauge the direction the wind is blowing,” Zandstra said. “Bouchard should either change his position on MCRI or come down the street to Oakland University and articulate the principles that lead to his decision to oppose the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative.”The Zandstra for U.S. Senate campaign also claimed that support for Bouchard for U.S. Senate drops in half when Republican primary voters are told that he opposes the MCRI proposal to ban racial preferences. Official poll results will be announced prior to the Toward a Fair Michigan Forum.”We are currently conducting a poll of primary voters in Michigan and the preliminary results overwhelmingly show Bouchard’s support evaporate when primary voters learn that he opposes the proposal to ban racial preferences,” said Zandstra spokesman John YOB. “Jerry Zandstra skyrockets into a significant lead over the opposition when voters learn the positions of the three candidates on MCRI.”Zandstra is the only candidate for U.S. Senate who supports the MCRI proposal to ban racial preferences or end taxpayer-funded affirmative action programs and initiatives in Michigan. MIRS recently reported that Mike Bouchard gambled when he announced his opposition to MCRI thus setting up a heated primary that will come down to Zandstra and Bouchard. The Zandstra news release may have been timed, in part, to counteract the effects of a recent Rasmussen poll (See “Stabenow Up 20, Granholm 11,” MIRS 01/25/06) that showed Zandstra doing slightly worse than the other two GOP U.S. Senate candidates — Bouchard and the Rev. Keith BUTLER — in head-to-head match-ups with incumbent U.S. Sen. Debbie STABENOW (D-Lansing).

Urban Republican Strikes Again
Derek “Kwame” Moss told College Republicans Saturday that he would be willing to sacrifice MCRI for Keith Butler to win his Senate race.
On top of that he also stated that he wouldn’t mind a DeVos loss if it meant a victory for Keith Butler.
Imagine this idiot as “Co Chair of the Michigan Federation of College Republicans” saying this garbage to the press.
On another note, Tom Barrett joins Ian Mattoon and Derek Moss in the race for Co Chair. Barrett served in some branch of the military as a Sargeant and is said to have strong conservative credentials. Barrett, a WMU student leaves some to wonder if Dan isn’t trying to axe Moss.
CR Year In Review
The College Republican ‘Year In Review’
College Republican Fight Night—Conservative CRs from across the state converged on Downtown Flint for “MFCR Fight Night”, at the home of William E. Kelly Jr. My two favorite matches were Atheist vs Atheist (Zack and Jon) and myself vs Jason. The former roommates stole the show. The fight night drew national attention, and even legislative staff was betting on the fights.
Cassin vs Hall—Matt Hall of WMU and Ryan Cassin of Albion ran against each other for MFCR Chair. This was perhaps one of the most contentious MFCR elections and certainly one of the best attended in the history of the organization. Cassin won, but was brought down a few months later by underhanded methods and “higher ups”.
CRNC Election— The national election between insider Paul Gourley and the reformer Michael Davidson was the battle of titans. Massive amounts of money were spent and state federations were ripped apart. In the end Gourley won despite trickery from both sides. Gourley was undoubtedly the more conservative candidate, but I think few would dispute that Davidson would have been a far better chairman.
Dr Kelly Founds the Working Mans Space Party—Former CR Dr. Kelly became fed up at the GOP’s lack of socialist leanings, so he formed the Working Mans Space Party, also known as the “Inter Stellar Marxist Party”, whose goal is to colonize space for the working man.
MSU CR Election—An election that most would say came down to “Party line CRs, and very conservative elements”. Luke Pelican ran against insider, Justine Ivanoff and lost. The interesting thing about this election was that neither side had won a majority of spots on the board; both factions were at a stand still with three members”. Rumors of Democrats influencing the election could not be proven.
Mackinaw Conference—As self anointed Chair of the MFCR, Dan Carlson boasted that an unprecedented number of CRs had made the trip to Mackinaw Island for the Midwest Republican Leadership Conference.
Governors Election—Much to the heartbreak of the “right wing” faction of CRs, Jack Hoogendyk dropped out of the race to unseat Granholm after billionaire Dick DeVos entered the race.

CRNC Audit
I was cleaning out my old email and I found one from Sam Moore. Below are the results of the audit that CRNC did on Michigan. 7 of 10 people listed as college Republicans from MSU, EMU and WMU did not respond to the audit.
If we would have had this audit last year for convention Halls loss would have been far greater.

Top 10 Up and Coming House Conservatives
Special emphasis on number 2; maybe those hell bent on his downfall should look at the big picture.
1. Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.)Age: 46Third term. Won 67% of vote in ’04.ACU rating: 99%Conservative Credentials: As chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, he consistently preaches fiscal discipline, even if it means getting an occasional slap from GOP leaders.
2. Rep. Patrick McHenry (R.-N.C.)Age: 29First term. Won 64% of vote in ’04.ACU rating: N/AConservative Credentials: He’s the youngest member of the U.S. House and unabashedly conservative. He’s also unafraid to challenge President Bush, as he did on Social Security reform and government spending.
3. Rep. Scott Garrett (R.-N.J.)Age: 46Second term. Won 58% of vote in ’04.ACU rating: 100%Conservative Credentials: He’s the most conservative member of the New Jersey congressional delegation. Last year he signed a letter demanding Kofi Annan step down as UN secretary-general.
4. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R.-Colo.)Age: 56Second term. Won 52% of vote in ’04.ACU rating: 100%Conservative Credentials: She gained fame for introducing the Federal Marriage Amendment, which, although it failed to win passage in Congress, set off a flurry of activity in state legislatures.
5. Rep. Tom Feeney (R.-Fla.)Age: 47Second term. Unchallenged in ’04.ACU rating: 100%Conservative Credentials: President Bush was so angered by Feeney’s opposition to the Medicare prescription drug bill, he hung up the phone on him. Feeney called former President Ronald Reagan “our Moses” after Reagan’s death.

Debate Challenge
Anyone that would like to debate the finer points of this MFCR election dating back from before CRNC to the present let me know. I will post unedited debates on here should anyone choose to take the offer.
Vote of No Confidence?
It has come to my attention that only 1 elected MFCR officer has endorsed Dan for Chairman. Apparently him throwing around his weight didn’t set well with the board.
On another note…how much money has Dan raised? I know that the MFCR bank account is much less than when he took over. Do we have anything to show for it? It’s been a long time since the money was spent, have we raised anything?

Dan Carlson’s incompetant Co Chair candidate failed to meet the credentialing deadline. It doesn’t look like Eastern Michigan University will be voting at this convention. So sad.
Carlsons Quinny Quivers at the Prospect of a Fair Election
Apparently Albions constitution didn’t make it to John Kowalski’s email until about 3 hours after the deadline. Below is Dan Carlsons childish email that he sent out on the topic…
Fellow College Republicans,I just wanted to let you know about situation with credentialing.Last night, Albion, Olivet, Baker, and UM-Flint did not get theircredentials in on time, and so will not be given delegates to theconvention, or considered chartered clubs. Albion waited until 11:59pm Eastern Time to send in anything, one minute before the deadline. This left them no room for error. They did not send in a copy oftheir constitution till 3:10 AM Eastern Time, and I did not get a copytill this morning around 10 AM. They have called me asking forleniency, but there are two problems with this. First, I wonder whatwould have happened had Ave Maria sent their materials in at 12:01 AMthis morning. They would have been denied delegates. I know thisbecause our MFCR system was tied into the Microsoft server, and atmidnight exactly it sent out emails to all the clubs telling them howmany delegates they had, if any. As chairman, I do not have the powerto unilaterally change the rules of our credentialing process postfacto. Our entire executive board voted unanimously to abide by theserules, and Albion failed. While I’m sorry that Albion will not berepresented at the convention in February, there is nothing that I, orJon, or the executive board, can do now except wish them the best ofluck. Why wait until 11:59 pm? They left themselves no room for error.Other clubs had problems. Some didn’t send in email lists right away, others also didn’t send constitutions and had to hunt theirs down. However, these other clubs were prudent and sent their lists andconstitutions in early, giving them time to fix any potential errors.Anyway, I hope that you all have a Happy New Year. Feel free to callme or email me with any questions regarding this situation.
God Bless,

Note the total tackiness of him using the MFCR mail list to send an attack email and then put a link to his campaign website on it also.
Below is Albion’s response to Carlson:
My Fellow College Republicans,As you all know, Albion College did not get its credentialing information inby the midnight deadline several days ago. As a result we no longer havevoting power at state convention and are no longer considered a charteredchapter. One would think that some type of notification would have been sent to theleader of that schools College Republican organization, myself, to allowwarning that such a deadline was looming. As I¹m sure you can guess I wasnot informed. My e-mail address has been mysteriously absent from thestatewide mailing list since Dan took office and despite several protests onmy part I have been unable to have my address reinstated. Thus the questionarises: How was I to know that I had a 48 hour deadline when no oneinformed me of such? The MFCR warning e-mail never reached my inbox, nor didalmost any other MFCR e-mail.I¹m not asking for special treatment*I¹m asking for the same treatment everyother state chair received. Had I received an e-mail I would have had in myConstitution and list of members in a timely fashion. In fact, the merefact that we got the list in on time and the Constitution in just threehours late given the circumstances is rather impressive. Dan Carlson sayswe are requesting leniency which, given the facts, is a huge stretch on hispart. For someone who was not elected to the position he now holds youwould think he would want to make sure that the upcoming election was fairbeyond any shadow of a doubt. Disenfranchising 150 plus members of theAlbion College Republicans is not the key to silencing his critics.Dan has already sent out an e-mail in which he stumbles through anexplanation of what has happened*another e-mail I did not get until it wasforwarded to me. If Albion is truly disenfranchised in the end due to a clerical error on behalf of the MFCR then Dan will have once again put intoquestion the legitimacy of his position. I speak as someone who no longerhas a vested interest in the MFCR. My time as a college activist is drawingto a close as I continue to take on more and more work in the professionalpolitical arena. I only hope that the next election for MFCR chairman isnot decided on the inability of those in power to add a name to a mailinglist. I hope we can settle this remarkably petty problem so that AlbionCollege can receive its voice in our electoral process. I urge theexecutive board to take action on behalf of our school before the MFCRconvention as we no longer have the power to do so.

Carlson Responds Again:
Fellow College Republicans,I recently received Jon Minjoe’s letter claiming that I purposefullytook him off my email list. This is simply not true. The email I hadfor him was minjoe@mfcr.org, which does not work. I never receivedany requests from him to change it to a new one. Further, theinformation sent in to Jon Kowalski and I was not from Jon Minjoe, itwas from Mike Compagnoni, the co-chairman at Albion, who was actuallyphysically present at the meeting where we moved the deadline up to11:59 pm on December 30 instead of December 31st. Not only was hepresent, but he had Albion’s proxy and was part of the unanimous voteto move it up a day. In addition to all this information, our meetingminutes are posted online, and Jon Minjoe, as a chapter chairmen, hasa duty to his club to read these. He had nearly a month to do so.Jon doesn’t actually claim to not have known that the deadline wasDecember 30th, he just claims that he should have gotten a personalemail from me about it, which it difficult considering until today Ididn’t actually even have his real email address. However, inaddition to Mike Compagnoni actually being at the meeting, DaveDrwencke, also from Albion, was on the conference call for themeeting. Dave Drwencke is also on my email list, because he was kindenough to provide an email that works. There is no doubt that Albion had as much notice as every other club in the state that the deadline had been moved up 24 hours.
Truly,
Dan Carlson

Dan you are lying about not taking Jon Minjoe off of the email list. Within 2 weeks after you usurping the leadership you saw that it would not be as easy as you think to take over, you instructed Kowalski to take him off of the email list. (as you did to me)
You clearly knew that his email was removed. Secondly it is your duty as a state chair to get the contact information of a club, especially when it is a very active chapter.
Your first clue that he was not getting the emails should be when they bounced back EVERY SINGLE TIME an email was sent to it.
As we move along in this election you appear more and more scummier. If you were principled before I dont think many would believe that now.
